GAFE and iPad app-smashing video project

GAFE and iPad app-smashing project
By @SylviaDuckworth/Sylvia Duckworth

My grade 5 students are working on Quebec projects, where they have to choose a city/town and create tourism-type videos (Thanks for idea, Isabelle Moore!). I have asked them to do Video #1 to begin with, then they can choose either video #2, #3, or #4.

(Note: If your students don’t have iPads, they can still do Video 1.)

Video 1: Voiceover with slides.

Here are some of my students' projects:
Nathaniel
Jack H.
Harrison

Video 2: Tellagami narration.
Video 3: Video narration.
Video 4. Picture in picture narration

Video 1 steps: (on computer) Google Docs + Google Slides + Screencastify + WeVideo

1. Complete text using an outline in Google Docs. Click here for my example.
2. Create Google Slides presentation with text. Click here for my example.
3. With Screencastify, record voice while manually advancing slides in "Present" mode.
4. Upload video to WeVideo to edit, add titles and music.
5. Once you hit the "Publish" button in Wevideo, it will take a while to process. Eventually you will get an email with the link to your video. If you want to put it on YouTube, click the "Download" button, then upload to YouTube. (If you buy a paid subscription to WeVideo, you can publish to YouTube right away).

Video 2 steps (Computer + iPad) : Google slides + Tellagami + iMovie

1. On your laptop, edit the Google Slides presentation so that the text appears at the top of the screen and to the far right of the screen. Keep the background white or, for variety, change all background slides to a solid colour. Click here for my example in blue and here for black.

2. Open the Slides presentation on your iPad. In “Present” mode, take a screenshot of each slide.

3. With the Tellagami app, design your avatar, then click on the Background option to upload the photo of your first slide. Hit the back button, then "Message" then click the microphone and record your voice reading the slide out loud. Leave at least 4 seconds at the end of your clip before you stop it (this is to avoid the Tellagami logo appearing at the end when you import videos to iMovie, step 5).

4. Continue in the manner until you complete all the slides. NOTE: you can just change the background of the first video instead of creating a new one each time.

5. Open iMovie and create a new film project. Import videos into iMovie, one by one. Drag the end handle of each video to cut off the Tellagami logo. Add music. Upload to YouTube. NOTE: Video quality is MUCH BETTER if you upload to YouTube directly from iMovie app as opposed to saving video on camera roll and then uploading from camera roll.

Video 3 steps (computer and iPad): Google slides + PromptSmart + DoInk Green screen + iMovie

1. Follow steps 1 & 2 in Video 2.

2. Film yourself narrating text in front of a green screen. NOTE: If filming with an iPad, best to stabilize your iPad instead of holding it by hand. Click here for an inexpensive brace that can be added to any camera tripod.

NOTE: To avoid having to memorize or look down at your text, use the iPad app PromptSmart. This app is amazing because:
a. Text can be uploaded from your Google Drive. (Note: create a new GDrive folder before hand with your script to find it)
b. Text will scroll automatically with your voice (note: only works in English. In another language, you can set the speed of the scrolling text. I recommend 120 words/min)
c. App will film while the text scrolls.

3. Download and open DoInk Green screen app.

4. On the bottom layer, add the photo of your first slide.

5. On the middle layer, add your green screen video.

6. Play the video and pause it where you want to add the next slide/photo. NOTE: annoyingly, when you pause the video the playhead will not go to the spot where you paused it (it will be quite a bit before that). So you need to take note of the time before you click Pause.

7. Add your next slide/photo by clicking on the plus sign on the bottom layer. Continue in this manner to the end.

8. NOTE: You cannot edit video footage in this app. You can edit it later in iMovie.

9. Save the video on your camera roll.

10. Open iMovie. Import video. Edit if necessary, add music and titles (if desired). Upload to YouTube.

Video 4 steps (computer and iPad): Google slides + PromptSmart + iMovie

1. Follow steps 1 & 2 for video 2.

2. With your iPad, film yourself up close narrating the text. You can use PromptSmart as in video #3.

3. Open iMovie on your iPad. Start by inserting all your screenshots for the slideshow from the camera roll.

4. Now insert your video narration from the camera roll, using the picture-in-picture option. Click here for a video that explains how to do this. Note that you will probably want to disable the Ken Burns effect. Click here to learn how (I had problems with this, but managed to remove most but not all of the Ken Burns effect).

5. Add music and post to YouTube.

Please share your projects with me!

  1. Such a great idea! I'm thinking of trying something similar with my primary students and simplifying it, creating a welcome video for new students to the school. We could work on the script together and compile a video as a class project. I will bug you for suggestions, I'm sure. ;)
